Spife -
It was a quiet night when it happened. They stars were clear but the moon was hidden. My village of Tabnerwach was especially quiet on that night. I was standing out in my field watching the stars as I often enjoyed doing, when I noticed a light coming from a hill on the edge of my field. It was a pulsing, orange light that made the trees and grass on that hill glow with a warm tone. Curious, I decided to go towards the light. The cows that I kept in my field were mooing nervously at me as I started towards the glow, almost as if they were fearful of whatever was glowing on that hill. They refused to follow me, watching me from a distance as I made my way up the hill. The closer that I got, the warmer the area became. The grass, colored orange from the glow, seemed to pulse with the light; in as the light became dim and out as the light grew strong. There on the top of that hill I stumbled upon something unusual which wholeheartedly shifted the trajectory of my life. It was on the ground that a statuette sat there, hot to the touch and being the source of the orange glow. The night sounds went quiet around that spot on the hill, and a feeling like the stars were going to fall in on me swept over my mind. Though my thoughts were racing with fear, a deep draw to touch the statuette pulled my limbs towards it. Falling to my knees, I reached out my hands, clasping the stone statuette in between them. A searing feeling burned my palms but it was not a burning of pain wholly, but a feeling of otherworldly ecstasy rushed in to placate the pain. I quickly withdrew my hands partly in reaction to the pain and partly due to the shock of such an intense feeling. The palms of my hands were blackened as though they had been burned but I felt no pain when touching them. The orange light still washed over my body, making the place on the hill seemed as though it was in front of a dying sun. A shuttered breath escaped from my lips, a breath that I did not know I was holding until I let it free. Reaching out again, I grasped the statuette strongly. The burning ecstasy returned and shot through me like lightning, but i mustered up the resolve to push through it. It felt as though the edges of my mortal frame were seconds from fracturing and ripping away, leaving only my thoughts to the world. It was a feeling so unknown to me though I could not help but relish in this feeling. I could finally feel the shape of the statuette, for the orange light had obscured its details from me. Tracing the shape with my fingers, I determined that it was made from stone, carved into a menagerie of twisting limbs and features almost human. Impossibly so, the statuette felt as though its shape changed, revealing different features that my fingers had not yet felt. It was at this moment that the feeling of pained ecstasy peaked. My body and the world around me felt as though it had a hole punched through it while simultaneously swallowing up everything from the top most point of the statuette. My body rippled with pain, but in my mind an image and a sound came through. An orange so strong that it removed the borders from the world created a room, the cellar my house. In there, a voice reached out from the invisible and permeated my mind rasping the sound, Bælor’Throndoth. I felt as though I was going to die, though death would have felt as a release in that moment, I still had not prepared to face my grave yet. I dropped the statuette, falling flat to my back writhing on the ground. I must have passed out, for I remember waking up, still being shrouded in that brilliant orange. Quickly I tore off my tunic and tossed it over the statuette, stifling the glow under the fabric. It was then that I noticed the state of my arms. The flesh had turned blackened and cracked. It looked as though my arms had become skeletal, only coated in a veil of charred skin. Though my arms looked as though I would not be able to use them, I felt no pain, and when I attempted to move my fingers they responded. I bent my elbows and the responded as well. My arms were only changed in looks alone, which at first I could not believe. Scooping up the now contained statuette, I ran back to my house, with the statuette wriggling and shifting in my arms the whole time. / My heart was still pounding as I made it back to my house. There was heat coming from the statuette even though I had it wrapped in my cloak, orange light seeping from the thinner part of the fabric. I clumsily found my way to my cellar, yanking the door open with my decrepit and charred hand. The heat was becoming too much to bear, starting to sear my chest where I was clutching it. The ecstasy was creeping in again as well, that bizarre twisting of pain into captivation. I let the bundle in my arms fall into the cellar, feeling weakened again and wanting to escape the heat pulsing from the strange statuette. The bundle of statuette and fabric made a thud on the stairs as it began to roll down them. With parched lips and beaded brow, I began to shut the door. The soft thuds of the cloth wrapped statuette changed into heavy thuds. Orange light once again met my face, warm and all consuming. The statuette had fallen out of the tunic I had wrapped it in and was now engulfing my cellar with orange. For some reason I could not look away, only peak out from behind the door and stare until the world went blank. I awoke some time later, having fallen down the stairs into my cellar. The fall down the stairs had twisted my ankle in a wrong way. Pained, I rose to me feet. The orange light was deeper into my cellar than where it had landed, now resting on a table I kept down there to work on things as needed. A warm feeling feeling crept down the side of my face meeting my mouth with the tang of blood. Wiping my forehead, my hand was coated in red when I pulled it away. This worried me, for I must have hit my head on the way down, but still the one thing that grasped my attention was that orange glow. I turned to leave, the orange pulse pained my head more than it was already hurting, but as I wobbly lurched towards the stairs I heard a deep voice curl through the room. / “Bælor’Throndoth” the voice said, dripping from an invisible mouth somewhere in my cellar. As the word washed through the room the orange light died out, as a candle being snuffed. I froze, a chill iced my neck as only the light from the night sky poured in through the open cellar door. There in the dark, the voice crawled out to me again....
